Okay, adventure junkies, listen up! Erzhihala Daban is calling your name. This insane mountain pass sits way up high at 4,307 meters (that's 14,130 feet!) right on the border between Qinghai and Gansu provinces in China.

We're talking about the legendary S204 Erga Highway in the Qilian Mountains, north-east of the stunning Hala Lake. Forget smooth asphalt, this is a proper off-road challenge. The entire 61.6 km (38.27 miles) from Qiqing Town to Yanglongxiang is unpaved, and some sections get seriously narrow. Hope you're good at reversing because you might need those skills! 4x4 is essential here, folks.

The views are breathtaking, assuming you can handle the heights. Some sections boast a crazy 14% gradient, and let's just say there are a few 500m drop-offs that will keep you on your toes. Definitely not one for beginner drivers. This is an experience you won't forget!

How To Have The Ultimate Road Trip To Pereval Sarymoynak?

🌍 Kyrgyzstan

Okay, adventure junkies, buckle up for Sarymoynak Pass! This epic mountain crossing sits way up in Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul Region, clocking in at a lofty 3,133 meters (that's 10,278 feet!). You'll find it nestled in the heart of the Tian Shan mountains, connecting the villages of Barskoon and Kara-say. Forget smooth tarmac, this is a proper gravel road adventure! The road itself is pretty good shape, so you don't need a monster truck to tackle it. It's become the main drag for getting to the Kumtor Gold Mine, so it's surprisingly well-maintained, with a decent amount of traffic rumbling along. Heads up: This pass was once part of the legendary Silk Road! Keep an eye out for some quirky sights along the way: a Soviet truck perched on a pedestal and a bust of Yuri Gagarin! Word is the cosmonaut chilled out on the shores of Issyk Kul after his space flight, so this place has some history. Generally, this road is open year-round, but be prepared for potential closures due to snow during winter.

Where is Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake?

🌍 Mongolia

Okay, picture this: Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake – a shimmering "White Lake" way up high in central Mongolia's Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park. Seriously, we're talking some altitude here! Is it worth the trek? Absolutely. Imagine this: the lake is sparkling against a stunning vista of pine-covered lava fields. Legend says the lake was made when an old couple forgot to cap a well, flooding the valley until a hero capped it with a mountaintop! Now, the road in? It's roughly entirely long, and goes east to west. Just remember the Khovd River bridge isn't easy, so get ready for an adventure.

A cliff road on the edge of the Black and White volcano

🌍 Arabian Peninsula

Alright, adventurers, buckle up for Jabal Abyad (or Jabal Bayda, the Black and White volcano!) in Saudi Arabia's αΈ€aΚΌil Province. This extinct volcano, formed from some seriously cool silica-rich lava, is a sight to behold. Deep in the Harrat Khyber volcanic field, you'll find a wild, unpaved road circling the crater, perched at a cool 5,905 feet. Seriously, some say it's one of the most incredible natural wonders on Earth. Word on the street is, hiking it might be better than driving. Heads up if you're not a fan of heights, keep your eyes on the path! While the volcano sides are super steep, the southern slope is just gentle enough for a (slippery!) climb to the top. Just north of Medina, you'll need a high-clearance 4x4 to tackle this loop around Saudi Arabia's tallest volcano. Trust me, the views are out of this world! The surrounding landscape is straight-up otherworldly. Get ready for an unforgettable ride.

πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ Japan

Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road is a total gem in central Japan! This 33.3km (20 mile) toll road winds its way through stunning mountain scenery, connecting Hakusan City to Shirakawa-go. Formerly known as Hakusan Super Rindo Forest Road, it climbs to over 1400 meters, offering panoramic views, hiking trails, and lots of waterfalls. Summer brings lush greenery, but autumn is when this route *really* shines with the changing leaves. Expect some tunnels along the way, and keep an eye on your speedometer - the limit's 30km/h. On the Gifu side, prepare for some serious curves and a quick climb in elevation. This road usually opens from early June to mid-November. Keep in mind that this paved road is exclusively for cars and generally takes about an hour to drive.
